By Katharine Rapoport. Pizzicato sounds like something delicious to order in an Italian restaurant, but it’s actually a technique that can make your violin sound a bit like a harp or a guitar — you pluck the strings. You can use the pizzicato technique to allow you to concentrate on placing your left‐hand fingers on their spots without having to think about using the bow at the same time.

The position of the left hand in violin playing. The development of a well-balanced left hand and fingering action will free up your violin or viola playing and greatly increase your playing pleasure. There are three critical aspects to the position of the left hand in violin playing: the thumb position, the hand shape, and the finger action.

Schradieck – School of Violin Technics. This is a great bundle of the three violin technique books by Schradieck and his scale studies book. Book one gives dexterity exercises in various postions, which are great to improve the confidence, speed and flexibility of your left hand.

On a practical, physical level of violin technique, there is not so much to know about. There are all the things you have got to learn to do; and all the things to learn not to do.

Yet all this amounts to only a few principles about how to hold the instrument and bow, how to use each hand. Teaching Left hand Position in 5 steps: Start with basic violin posture. Extend the left hand out, placing the pad of the thumb at the first tape.

Keep a straight thumb. The tip should be about level with the top of the fingerboard. First finger touches near the nut, before the second joint – the one closest to the palm. The left hand should be standing up, with the fingers going down on the tips with the nail bed facing the child’s face.

The left hand will take up the slack when other body parts are not doing their jobs. It will hold up the violin when the head doesn't. It will continue to work when the left elbow is improperly placed.

By using any violin book, be it a technique book or a history book about violin origins, and a skilled music teacher, violin playing can be so much simpler. Graphs and images on left-hand finger placement are also discussed in the book, as well as topics on scales, note reading, instructions on playing on a duet, music symbols or patterns.

Professor of Violin Julia Bushkova explains one of the common problems of the left hand: 1st & 2nd fingers placements and their effects on the dexterity of the left hand. Playing the violin entails holding the instrument between the jaw and the collar bone.

(see below for variations of this posture). The strings are sounded either by drawing the bow across them (), or by plucking them ().The left hand regulates the sounding length of the strings by stopping them against the fingerboard with the fingers, producing different pitches.

For everyone interested in how the violin is played – this website illustrates my approach to learning the fundamental techniques at the heart of good violin playing. The website combines my two titles (Violin Bow Technique & Violin Left Hand) previously available on disk, and sets all the material in one easily accessible place.

If you would play the violin left-handed, you will hold the bow in the left hand and the violin in the right hand. Also you could live with being limited in your bowing technique to a very simple detaché technique. For the left hand you’ll miss a missing or disabled finger right from the start playing your first scale.

Pianists can use. This online violin lesson is the 1th in a new series of videos on left-hand technique. In this video, it's all about the 1st finger, the right posture, direction, and position.
